The railroading history is goes much deeper  then the Fallen Flags.  New Jersey was once an industrial center of the country.   This spawned a Locomotive manufacturing industry which placed Patterson in the center.  The task of shipping goods and people formed a virtual navy of railroad owned craft designed to cross that river.  And, of course, the first steam engine to run in the Americas was located in New Jersey.
