19th Century New Jersey Railroads

This is the story of those railroads that formed the foundation for the more famous railroads of the 20th century. Some represent the cornerstone of mighty corporations like the Pennsylvania, others are only footnotes.  This is the first generation of American railroading.  During this time, most of the railroads were formed to serve a specific region or industry.  Most of the Northwest counties had railroads servings mining or dairy.  The central part of the state found railroads chartered for bringing the agricultural products to market.  Southern rails primarily served the beach resorts.
